This project was completed as part of a professional internship with Von Dreele-Freerksen Construction Company/Prairie Plus Design in Oak Park, Illinois.

A structurally unsound and antiquated maid's quarters were transformed into a modern, private yoga studio through a year-long labor of love and design. The design-build exchange was ongoing until the final weeks, with custom interior finishes determined collaboratively on-site in regular meetings between the owner, general contractor, carpenters, and myself. A strong guiding concept kept everyone on the same track to create a meaningful, beautiful, spiritual space that fused notions of home and cottage, Eastern influences of harmony and contrast, and a tie to the adjacent 1913 Frank Ross home.

Each of these disparate conceptual elements were considered with every design decision from the reclaimed oak floor to the oil-rubbed bronze finishes. Contrasts formed themselves through the construction process, calling for a rigorous attention to detail in areas where two different materials physically intersected. This is most notable in the demarcations between the dark stained oak and the honey cypress wainscoting, as well as in the wash room, where Japanese contrast design inspired a zen atmosphere appropriate for a meditation space.
